FOESSEL RETAINS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD AT SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK
Motor School Racing – Porsche 997 Cup
Australian GT: Round 4
Over the weekend, team Motor School Racing headed to Sydney Motorsport Park for Round 4 of the Australian GT where we continued our push for the championship in the Challenge Class. Friday provided a busy start to the weekend. with two practice and one qualifying session that day. The weather stayed fine for us despite all predictions for rain. Pushing hard in practice, I secured a new PB around Sydney Motorsport Park. Following this we made some changes to the car and proceeded to get ready for qualifying. With new tyres on we went out and gave it a blast. Against our main rival we were only 0.3 seconds off their fastest driver, so I was over the moon. This put us third in class for the start of race 1 on Saturday.
Saturday was overcast with light rain leading up to the start of the race. We were lucky that it didn’t get heavier as we started the race on slicks. I secured an early lead and started to build up a lead of just over 15 seconds. There was a safety car called just as pit window opened, we were able to pit but due to the extended safety car period it squashed the lead we had and we lost our early advantage. We took off at the end of the safety car period and were able to build a comfortable 10 second lead against our main rival, but just as quick as it started we were back under safety car again for the second time. We had a 5 second lead following the safety car, but after a few laps there was an incident where a GT3 R cut across in my path into turn 2 and spun the car around. Luckily we picked up no damage on the car and we finished the tough race third in class.
Sunday was another day and after the drama of the racing on Saturday, I was very excited to get into it and give it my best crack. At the start of the race it was hard to find pace as I was constantly dicing with some exotic cars such as a Ford GT, 2011 Cup Car and Audi R8, but once we got past and cleared we could focus on the task and went for it to set consistent fast times putting us into a good position for after the pit stops.
After the stops we came out just behind our main rival and within a lap overtook him and pushed on gaining an extra 3-4 second lead per lap and started closing in on the leader in our class. Unfortunately due to a mechanical issues near the end we dropped some pace due to a clutch issue but finished the race still leading the championship by 23 points!
Next stop fr the Australian GT is Sandown on the 12 – 14th of September, so with a Championship in our sights, we will be pushing hard in the coming rounds. My sincere thanks for your support of Motor School Racing!
